Global Lounge - Zydeco
Date aired: 4th September 2011
Playlist
Brownskin Woman - Beau Jocque and the Zydeco Hi Rollers
Boogie Chillun - Beau Jocque and the Zydeco Hi Rollers
What you gonna do - Beau Jocque - "Zydeco" 2000 Putumayo Music
I'm on the wonder - Buckwheat Zydeco
Calinda - Clifton Chenier
Creole Farmers Stomp - The Creole Zydeco Farmers
Burnin' Flames Special - Jude Taylor and his Burning Flames
I'm in love - Nathan and the Zydeco Cha Chas
You're no good for me - Rosie Ledet
Queen of Spades - Jeff Martin 777.
Sista - Jay Hoad - "Stories for the Soul" 2011
Now I've been watching a few Zydeco videos and I think if you're dancing to Zydeco, you're not doing it right unless you got a big ol hat on...! :P
Oh my, these dudes seriously look after their instruments - that's Beau Jocque wearing his plastic apron so the piano accordion doesn't get sweat on it....but I think at 6ft 6" he can probably wear whatever the hell he likes! And great images of a frottoir (why couldn't I say THAT properly on air..?) You KNOW it's Zydeco when you see one of those on stage..
No moving images for this one but one of the songs I enjoyed from the show.

And lastly, a clip of Jay Hoad who played at the Club on Friday night to a very appreciative audience. (and I wasn't missed it. D'uoh!)
Too chilled for a weekday...on the Lounge!
This week's show has been inspired by the recent (July) release of the new Thievery Corporation album "Culture of Fear." Hang around in world music cyberspace long enough and you'll hear about Thievery...they've become one of my favourites...
From there I realised The Shaolin Afronauts were due to release their first album: The Flight of the Ancients.
I've had a bit of this music around since Womadelaide 2011 and thought it time to share it with you! :) The Shaolin Afronauts are based in Adelaide but getting all of them into the same place all at once can be no mean feat! (3 piece horn section, 5 piece rhythm section, 3 musicians on percussion) So if you can make any of their gigs in Adelaide, it's worth doing.
Also popping up here is Lance Ferguson in the form of "Lanu" a side project of the Bamboos. His song "Mother Earth" from the 2007 album "This Is My Home" shows his comprehensive knowledge of world music and particularly African rhythms.
He has recently released a new album with Megan Washington filling most of the vocal spots. "Her 12 Faces" was released in March this year.
Date aired: 28/8/11
After a frenetic few weeks of festival organising, I needed an easy playlist this week, something simple and relaxing. :)
Playlist
Mandala - Thievery Corporation
Vampires - Thievery Corporation
The Forgotten People - Thievery Corporation
Fragments - Thievery Corporation
Web of Deception - Thievery Corporation
Mother Earth - Lanu
Fall (ft Megan Washington) - Lanu
Flight of the Ancients - The Shaolin Afronauts
Journey through time - The Shaolin Afronauts
Kilimanjaro - The Shaolin Afronauts

Global Lounge gets jigging! In a Celtic way....
Date aired: 10/7/11
This week we started with a song, or two...by the Decemberists..
The playlist was inspired by the music of the Decemberists and started with a song about a mining tragedy that happened in the US, June 1917. Seemed like a good time to think of mine safety and appropriate considering the audience of our community station, many of whom are here for mining.
I followed the roots of the music from the album "The King is dead" and along with going to REM and Bruce Springsteen, the story song format led me to the Emerald Isles and Scotland and traditional folk music for a modern audience.
Playlist
Rox in the Box - The Decemberists - album "The King is dead" 2011
Alasdair MacColla - Clannard - album "Lore" 1996
The Rosses Highlands - Altan - album "Harvest Storm" 1992
Tobar Mhoire (Tobermory) - Capercaillie - album "Secret People" 1993
Hi Rim Bo - Capercaillie - album - "Secret People" 1993
The Cullybacky Hop - Lunasa - album "Se" 2006
Glentrasna - Lunasa - album "Se" 2006
The Ballivanich Reel/ The boy in the boat - Lunasa - album "Se" 2006
Eireann - Afro Celt Soundsystem album "Capture" 2010
Down by the water - The Decemberists - album "The King is dead" 2011
Garinish Island/The Magic Hat - Cloudstreet - album "Swallow the Concertina" 2000
The Lock Flight - Cloudstreet - album - "The Fiddleship" 2004
And we finished the show with Australian group Cloudstreet playing some traditional Australian music. (showing it's Celtic roots!)
They will be in town at the end of July for the opening of the Red Earth Festival and should be brilliant!
Looking forward to some live music in town!!

Global Lounge - in the swamp!
Date aired: 19th June 2011
We go to New Orleans....
The playlist this week has been inspired by the release of Hugh Laurie's album in April entitled "Let them talk." While it may have received some mixed reviews and I haven't listened to the whole album yet, I was impressed with everything I have heard. His interpretations of the original tracks are authentic despite his lack of social and cultural blues background. This I put down to a true passion for the music of New Orleans and the blues! But of course Hugh has been a piano player for a while and we've seen some of his talent on the tv series "House." I'm delighted to find it was actually his playing that we see....

The Mandinka kora is a unique instrument with a harp-like appearance and a notched bridge similar to that of a lute or guitar. It sounds somewhat like a harp, but its intricate playing style can be closer to flamenco guitar.
The kora's body is made from a calabash gourd cut in half and partially covered with cow skin. Traditionally, there are twenty-one playing strings plucked by the thumb and forefinger of each hand. The remaining fingers grip the two vertical hand posts. For strings, players use fishing line which provides a brilliant tone and is easily obtained at the local market. Twenty-one anchor strings attach the playing strings to an iron ring bored through the base of the kora's hardwood neck. The player tunes the kora by moving the leather rings to achieve the appropriate tension on each string. Kora players use a variety of tunings.
