Cinderella's Shoes - The Picture Box Orchestra
For you when it rains - Sundog (Arthur Jeffes from The Penguin Cafe - UK) album "Insofar/Side 1
Shadows in Water - Sundog al "Insofar/Side 1"

I had to leave out this track:
4Lb - Sundog al "Insofar/Side 1"
The show ran over time but if you like Sundog, I'd recommend this track as well if you don't want the whole album.

One of the artists I really should have put bionic legs on and made myself get to was Sundog. A single performance on the Friday night would have been very special. Wish I'd got to it now.
There is always at least one that you wish you'd seen.

Local paper review - Sundog - The Advertiser

Tinariwen.
A Touareg group based in Mali.
A nomadic band moving between Mali and Algeria.
Former rebel fighters, now successful musicians.
On stage their supremely laid back style defies their stormy past.

Friday night - WOMADelaide 2012

Perfect weather for the Friday night - gotta love that!

Date: 18th March 2012

Playlist

Patience of Angels - Eddi Reader (not a song she performed but a favourite of mine..)
Willie Stewart - Eddi Reader
Perfect - Eddi Reader
Dance dance dance (Yowsah yowsah yowsah) - Chic
Everybody Dance - Chic
Le Freak - Chic
Good Times - Chic
Rappers Delight - The Sugarhill Gang
(ground breaking hip hop song from 1979 that caused a lawsuit because it sampled Good Times and no acknowledgement etc)
Lady (hear me tonight) - Mood (I couldn't find a Modjo version and this one seemed the closest)
This song uses Soup for One as it's inspiration, tempo faster and more modern. Works.

Ok, well you've heard me rave about Nile.
Time to hear about Eddi....well, really, it's better to just hear her sing if you have the chance.

I only played 3 of her songs, I could have played more except the ones I wanted I don't own...yet.
Plus the tracks I had were live recordings. Best to hear her live, but makes for technically challenging broadcasting in our little studio!

I am absolutely kicking myself that I didn't buy her album of songs that were based on the poems of the famous Scottish bard, Robert Burns. We can thank Burns for Auld Lang Syne. I'll have to find that album and grab it when I do...
She put music to his "lyrics" and got a musical creation that will probably never date.

You may remember Eddi from when she was singing with Fairground Attraction in the 80's. "Perfect."
And another piece of trivia, Eddi lived for a while in Kilamarnoch, as did Robert Burns.
Kilmarnoch was the hometown of my family before they immigrated to Australia.
I should pop over there one day I suspect...

I loved her passion for her music.
I loved her voice, so sure of herself and so confident.
I loved that she was so unaffected by fame and so warm and friendly on stage.
I loved that she was so clearly a very creative soul and embraces that about herself, she allows her audience to share in that joy.

I really enjoyed seeing a small team of excellent musicians on stage working together so wonderfully to create an hour of magic on the grass at Stage 3 on a Friday evening.
Unforgettable.

I even enjoyed Alan Kelly on the piano accordion. He came out last year and I didn't see the Alan Kelly Gang perform. Shame on me.

Unfortunately this year there are many "shame on me" moments for missing many artists.
I guess I was so intent on being able to stand, sit and walk on the Tuesday that I had to forego some of the performers I wanted to see.
A common problem which I doubt will change.

But I am very, very glad I didn't miss Eddi.
Or Chic for that matter.
Miles apart in music styles - but that's womad for you...and anyway, EVERYTHING is better "live."

Eddi Reader live singing "Willie Stewart" - less people on stage in Adelaide but sometimes less is more.

And on that note, that's enough for now...

Fare thee weel..
May the best ye hae ivver seen be the warst ye'll ivver see.

Yowsah Yowsah Yowsah

It's been a while since I've posted and I have in fact been on air.
My bad.

Date: 4th March 2012

Playlist

Nile Rodgers is coming to Adelaide.

I want your love - Chic
We are family - Sister Sledge
He's the greatest dancer - Sister Sledge
Le Freak - Chic
Higher Love - Steve Winwood
Let's Dance - David Bowie
Like a Virgin - Madonna
The Reflex - Duran Duran
Wild Boys - Duran Duran
Original Sin - INXS
Remember the Time - Michael Jackson

This is as close as I can remember it....
There was so much to say about Nile and his journey through life so far that I think I had to cut songs from the playlist.
But as I said at the time, one hour is hardly enough to even begin to cover his enormous amount of work.

Now that I'm reading his autobiography there is so much more that could be said.
About the book, about his life and about his music and about surviving cancer.

Book:  Le Freak: An Upside Down Story of Family, Disco, and Destiny by Nile Rodgers.
It's not a boring read.

Nile's Blog is here.

I invited my eldest son, home on holidays, to come into the studio and guest programme/present with me.
He hasn't been on air for over a year and we had a great time. I enjoyed having a bit of a break in planning this week as well as listening to some of the music he likes to listen to.
It's always easier to present a show when you're not alone in the studio
:)

This band (This Town Needs Guns) is based in the Uk. The song titles from the album "Animals" are all based on animal names. Interesting story behind it. Wiki it: here

Tristan's absolute favourite from the hour came complete with tales of the live performance in Adelaide. Yeah!

Hypnotic Brass, Adam Page, The Bamboos, The Verses...why not?

Date aired: 13th November 2011

Well this week I had very little time to prepare for this hour of music so I threw together some tunes from my personal collection. Which of course includes a fair amount of Australian content.
I was a little disappointed to miss out on Hypnotic Brass Ensemble playing again in Adelaide on Friday night after seeing their 2010 performances. They really are a dynamic live show. It's just no fun going by yourself... :)

Ella doesn't drive. There was no stunt double. A stressful day for the owner of that classic car....! But it was all cool...nice vintage Australian styling for this music clip.

If these dudes were playing music outside my train station I'd be late for work that morning....and rather short on cash for the day... :)
Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. They're all brothers...not just in music...
